Torrance, CA Walk for Peace (more below)...
Dear [[First_Name]],
Another amazing month in the Department
of Peace campaign, and another abundantly full newsletter! And
still, no matter how much we share about what's happening in this movement, it's
just the tip of the iceberg of the transformation that YOU are helping
create.
If I read only mainstream media,
I'd think war and violence
is all there is. But when I read THIS news, I see that Peace is everywhere.
It's walking city streets, on college campuses, at the United
Nations, bursting forth globally, and growing in the halls of Congress.
And it's all happening because of the courage, commitment and
vision of everyday folks like you and me.
I invite you to read these stories and see the vision of a Department
of Peace in action. What a privilege to stand with you in a partnership
of peace, for peace.
In gratitude,
Wendy Greene

Walk for Peace Walkathons Raise Funds, Awareness Nationwide

Bigfork, Montana Walkers
From California to Montana to
Florida to Maine, hundreds of Department of Peace campaign supporters
came out—rain or shine—to
walk the talk of peace. On Saturday, September 15, 2007, participants
in the second-annual "Walk for Peace" walkathons brought
a message of hope and possibility to more than 50 cities in 24 states.
Some simply walked, others held concerts, fairs, and fundraisers,
and all raised awareness of the deep need for increased efforts in
violence reduction and prevention in general, and of the Department
of Peace legislation in particular.
Read
more about
these amazing events, including Watertown, TN ("This was as
grassroots as it gets. . ."). Torrance, CA, (...nearly
90 walkers, including 20 travel-weary Japanese who came straight
from the airport to join the festivities), Boise, ID, (Sponsored
by the Student Peace Alliance group there!), Big Fork, MT (raised
more than $1,000 with "about 30 walkers, ranging in age from
5 to 85") and many more!
Congratulations to all walkers and
organizers for an incredible day of action!

Legislative Actions!
Press for Peace
and Senate Call-In |
|
October 12, 2007, we take our next national action
with the debut of “Press for Peace.” We’re
delivering a packet of media generated about the movement
and the legislation to all co-sponsors on the Hill,
and any other members who grassroots organizers ask
us to approach. Grassroots groups will meet with members’ offices
locally, delivering similar packets. We’ll be
showing Congress that this issue is REAL and people
all over the country are talking about and wanting
a U.S. Department of Peace. Join the All Call Tuesday,
October 2 (info below), visit the
website,
or contact the D.C. office at 202-296-1187 for more
information!
This follows fast on the heals of our most recent action,
our “Three-in-Three” Senate call-in! Gratitude
to all who participated in this unique action where
we called and wrote Senators Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Orrin
Hatch (R-UT) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT), inviting them
to be national leaders and sponsor a non-partisan introduction
into the Senate of legislation to create a U.S. Department
of Peace. We know that each Senators offices received
at least 160 faxes/emails over the three days and who
knows how many calls. We’ll be following up with
their offices in DC and locally to build upon that effort.
You can learn
more about what that action was here.
Report from Japan:
The Third
Global Summit for Ministries and Departments of Peace
The Global Alliance for Ministries and Departments of Peace hosted
its third global summit September 21-26. Approximately 50 delegates
representing 24 countries and six continents joined the summit,
which featured extensive workshops, presentations and working groups
to establish a new foundation for the growing global movement.
The U.S. delegation includes two Peace Alliance staff, two Student
Peace Alliance representatives, and two grassroots volunteers.
| Powerful work
continues as of this writing during post-summit
activities, including a Congressional Briefing
and Press Conference in Japan's Diet (parliament).
Six Japanese congressmen and senators attended
along with journalists from three Japanese news
organizations. One of the parliamentarians present
was Senator Shokichi Kina of Okinawa who told
Dot Maver, Executive Director of The Peace Alliance, "The
United States gave Japan peace, economy and politics.
Japan has returned economy and politics to the
U.S. but not peace yet. It is now time to return
peace to the U.S." |

Holiday Card Designs Wanted!
Each year The Peace Alliance commissions holiday cards for supporters
to buy and use when sending out their holiday greetings. It’s
a good fundraiser for us, and a great way to spread the word about
the Department of Peace campaign.
We’re inviting anyone who wants to to submit a drawing
or design for consideration as this year’s holiday card!
From professional graphic designers to kids with crayons, this
is your chance to design a greeting card to express your view for
peace this holiday season.
Please, no peace signs or anything specific
to any one religion. Submit a JPEG to wendy@thepeacealliance.org by
October 19, 2007. We look forward to seeing all the possibilities!

YouTube Messages

Congressmembers George Miller and Lynn
Woolsey of CA have given
short video messages about why they support the legislation to
establish a U.S. Department of Peace. See these and other campaign
videos here.

Fundraiser Success!

On
September 16th, Mill Valley CA was home to the nation's first "Table
Captain" model fundraiser for the Peace Alliance. 26 Table
Captains joined many volunteers to bring in over
250 guests for a benefit luncheon in support of our campaign.
Many exciting speakers, including
Rep. Lynn Woolsey of CA, helped make the event a huge success!
A big thanks to all who helped, including the primarily volunteer
event organizers Judy Kimmel, Sarah Cross-Mills, Emily Wickman
and Barbara Sullivan. We are creating a template for this style
of event that can happen around the country. Stay tuned.
