Welcome

Dear [[First_Name]],

As we move more deeply into the holiday season, the work of The Peace Alliance and the Campaign for a U.S. Department of Peace is, as always, overflowing with gifts. We’ve done our best to capture them in this newsletter where you’ll find an excerpt from a heart-felt letter from outgoing Executive Director Dot Maver (with a link to the full text on our website); the inspiring vision of our SPA-led December action, “Call for a Department of Peace;” exciting new contributions from Founder and President of the Board Marianne Williamson; Stories from the Field that will have you laughing and crying, and so much more.

As always, we thank you for your tremendous generosity—of time, money, energy and commitment—toward this magnificent vision we share. It’s a true privilege to serve this work, and support the efforts of this astounding group of people. Thank you for standing with us.

In peace,

Letter from Dot

(NOTE: This is an excerpt of Dot's letter. For the full letter, please visit our website)

As many of you know, this is my final correspondence to you as Executive Director of The Peace Alliance as I will now focus on applied peacebuilding and the global call for ministries and departments of peace. A huge social change movement is currently underway, and The Peace Alliance is a player in it. Words cannot express my heartfelt joy and gratitude as together over these past three years we have experienced a shared responsibility and shared leadership process that has grown into a movement and is helping to shape history.

This movement is inspiring and mobilizing a new generation of citizen activists who are committed to being the change they wish to see in the world, and you are the very reason it is so. It makes my heart sing to think of our staff, state coordinators, congressional district team leaders, Student Peace Alliance leaders, and vast network of grassroots volunteers who are the change!

When I think of each of you I am aware of a heart connection that endures.   I know we will continue to journey together to a culture of peace and I look forward to that ongoing journey. We are part of the transition team! And we are family – all of us have a unique contribution. Keep on keeping on, and know that you are making a difference.

All best wishes for peace and joy during this Season of Light and throughout the New Year, in the Spirit of Peace,

[Graphic - Dot Maver's Signature]

Marianne Williamson, President of the Board

The word is out and the results immeasurable. Marianne Williamson, best-selling author, visionary speaker, and founder of The Peace Alliance Foundation, was recently elected president of the Board of Directors of The Peace Alliance. Many of you already joined Marianne on our monthly All Call in November. She’ll be joining us again December 4 to continue sharing her unique vision of our work. (The All Call is the first Tuesday of every month and open to the public. See the call-in information below.)

You should also have received her year-end holiday fundraising email, sharing her view of our collective work and future.

Marianne is also joining Managing Director Wendy Greene, National Field Director Kathy Kidd and Aaron Voldman, executive director of the Student Peace Alliance at monthly strategic planning and coordination sessions in our DC office. And you’ll find Marianne working in the Campaign for U.S. Department of Peace in other ways too, including coming to many of the regional conferences that are currently in planning.

Together, in partnership with you, we continue to shape this powerful movement, calling forth a new era in political and social transformation.

Our First Public Service Announcement on Its Way!

National Communications Director Patty Kuderer reports:

Dot Maver with Kathryn Levine's Grad students at at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New JerseyWe finished filming our PSA in early November at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey! The PSA has been written, produced and filmed by graduate students under the direction of broadcast media professional Kathryn Levine and focuses on educating the public on the issue of violence as a public health issue in this country. The objective is to make violence prevention, and by extension the Department of Peace legislation, part of the election-year dialogue; to raise awareness of the problem of violence in our country and of the legislation; and increase support for and positive press interest in the legislation and The Peace Alliance.

I could talk all day about this amazing two-day experience with the students, Kathryn, the other teachers, and the school itself, but for brevity's sake all I will say is that it all started when Kathryn was looking for a nonprofit for the class to support and read in her hometown newspaper about the "Peace of the Pie" action done by New Jersey Department of Peace activists. This small bit of local news inspired her to visit the website, learn more about the campaign and The Peace Alliance, and then she educated her class about us -– and they chose to support this work. In other words, we're able to create this PSA because of the work of grassroots activists just like you!

As a footnote, Fairleigh Dickinson now has a new Student Peace Alliance chapter as well, founded by students NOT in the class!

We are now in the post-production editing phase, which should be completed by December 20. We anticipate the PSA will launch in January 2008 in coordination with our themed action, “I Stand for Peace.

Call for a Department of Peace

Sign up today to join the Student Peace Alliance and The Peace Alliance in our Call for a Department of Peace. SPA activists have created a series of Wiki pages enabling you, your family, friends -- anyone and everyone concerned about reducing and preventing violence in our world -— to sign up for a time slot to call their member of Congress and encourage their support of the legislation to establish a U.S. Department of Peace.

We're working to enroll enough people to call every member of the House of Representatives every thirty minutes! This is a massive undertaking, and we need YOU to make it happen.

Go to this website to sign up for your slot. All you have to do is make ONE phone call (if you want to do more, we'll have tips on the website of who to contact)! And spread the word to everyone you know about this important action.
