Welcome
Dear [[First name]],
My good friend, Mike Robbins, with whom I share a love of baseball, has written a book called Focus
on the Good Stuff. He says, "So often we know exactly what we need to do to make positive changes in our lives. Knowing these things is a good first step, but only if it leads us to take effective action." And on his phone message he asks me to tell him what I am grateful for today.
Today and every day I am grateful to be on this journey with you. We are all peacebuilders striving to be the change while identifying programs that reduce and prevent violence as we help create safe and sustainable communities and structures in our government that support a culture of peace.
That is why I am pleased to announce our 2nd
Annual Walk for Peace Campaign, taking place on
September 15th in cities across the country. These walks offer
a great opportunity to get the word out about our campaign and
take a stance for peace.
The purpose of the walks is not to stand in opposition of
anything, but rather to highlight what is possible through
the field of peacebuilding. The walks also offer also offer a
fun and easy way to raise much needed funds for the campaign. We
hope you will join us in your city this year. Details are below.
We are also mid-way through our annual donor drive and we invite
you to Invest In Peace. We chose this timing beginning with
the Fourth of July to emphasize what we all know: Peace is Patriotic.
Yet, unless we put our attention on what we want, it all too often
slips away.

September is International Culture of Peace Month, with literally thousands of pro-peace activities all around the world. In
our campaign, we are encouraging Walk for Peace
walkathons on September 15. Districts across the nation are already
creating their own walks. It’s a fun, creative, dynamic way
to raise money and awareness about the Department of Peace.
WHO: YOU, your friends, and others ready to literally walk the talk
of peace.
WHAT: A new twist on the
traditional walkathon fundraiser, raising money for The Peace Alliance
and moving the campaign forward by raising awareness.
WHERE: A public park, city
sidewalk, school or other accessible and visible area you choose,
in communities all across the nation!
WHEN: Saturday, September
15, 2007, or another date of your choice between September 11 (Patriot
Day/Anniversary of Gandhi's first nonviolent action) and September
21 (the International Day of Peace).
WHY: To gain visibility in your city and across the country; raise
money for the Peace Alliance; be a model of being the change; support
International Culture of Peace month; and inspire and enroll others
in the Campaign.
HOW: It's simple! As always, any project is real when one person
who can enroll three friends to help says YES!

The Global Alliance:
Ministry of Peace Established in Nepal
|
|
The Peace Alliance is a founding member of the Global Alliance for Ministries and
Departments of Peace, an association of grassroots activists in some 24 countries calling for such government institutions. |
| Nepal is one of those countries,
in the person of Manish Thapa, director of the
Asian Study Center for Peace and Conflict Transformation
of Nepal. Manish recently spoke with Secretary
Madhu P. Regmi of Nepal’s Ministry of Peace
and Reconstruction, which was created as part of
the peace pact that has brought an end to a decade
of violence in the country. Manish says, "We
both agreed that this Ministry is unique not only
because it is just the second Ministry of Peace
in the world but also in terms of its being the
most powerful after the Prime Minister’s
own portfolio. For example, in the absence of the
Prime Minister, the Minister of Peace will execute
all the state functions. The Secretary thanked
the Nepal Peace Initiative Alliance as well as
the Global Alliance for its constant lobbying for
such a ministry in Nepal, and he gave his word
that he and his Ministry will support all of our
future efforts." |
