Third Annual Mother’s Day National Action Day
Peace wants a Piece of the Pie!
On Behalf of Mothers Everywhere
May 11th, 2007

Dear [[First_Name]],

More than 115 Congressional offices are already scheduled to be visited as part of our third annual Mother’s Day “Peace of the Pie” National Action Day! More volunteers are signing up every day. It is not too late to join us. It can be as simple as dropping off a pie and an informational handout at your local congressional office on or around May 11th, or you can gather members of your community to have an official meeting.

PARTICIPATE!

We know all too well the lack of attention and resources that serious peacebuilding efforts receive in our nation. It’s time for that to change. Your participation in this Mother's Day-inspired campaign is a creative way for us to get out the word about the Department of Peace and to let Congress know that we want our government to make peacebuilding a national investment priority, and that “Peace wants a Piece of the Pie,” (i.e., the federal budget). Learn more!

Local Spotlight
Highlighting Local Campaign Activities

New Feature! We can hardly keep up with the incredible creativity and commitment of our grassroots. So we need you to tell us about it! Each month we will feature a story written by a grassroots volunteer spotlighting their local group’s activities. We launch this new feature with a story from California’s Inland Empire group. Want your group to be next? Information on how to submit a story is at the end of this feature.

PEACE BENEFIT & FESTIVAL
AND STEP-IT-UP ENVIRONMENTAL DAY OF ACTION

The Inland Empire Department of Peace & Nonviolence Alliance (IEDOPNA) hosted a peace benefit and festival on April 14, 2007, in Redlands, CA. The event was designed to raise funds to bring the play, “The Gift of Peace” to the southern California region known as the Inland Empire, and to inform and educate the public about the Department of Peace legislation. Nearly 100 people turned out -- right in the heart of one of the most conservative areas in southern California! Attendees praised the event and shared how much they enjoyed gathering together as a peace community.

The festival featured local vendors, artisans and musicians. Regional Coordinator Bobbi Jo Chavarria also enrolled her family friend Evelyn Erives, the morning radio personality from 99.1 KGGI, in making a special appearance. Other area groups shared resource information, including the Citizens Action for Peace, the Central City Lutheran Mission, Veterans for Peace, OneCareNow.org, and the Riverside Volunteer Center.

The event also incorporated the Step-It-Up 2007 Day of Environmental Action, the largest day of citizen action focusing on global warming in our nation’s history, which photographed participants displaying their message: “Step It Up Congress! Cut Carbon 80% by 2050!” This photograph was sent to Washington, DC along with photos from hundreds of other events across the country.

“The issue of environmental stewardship is right in line with the message of peace,” said Bobbi Jo Chavarria. “So often it is limited or valued resources that can cause conflict and violence on a local and global scale.”

Among the crowd were Congressional candidate (CA-41), Rita Ramirez-Dean, who has pledged her support of the legislation, and Mark Shepherd, Congressional aide from Congressman Joe Baca’s office (CA-43).

The IEDOPNA volunteers sold door prize tickets, drinks and desserts and accepted contributions at the door to help raise money for the local campaign. Attendees were invited to the production of “The Gift of Peace,” scheduled for April 28th and pre-sale tickets were available. With the success of the benefit and festival, and connecting to others in the community, the IEDOPNA is looking forward to increased support for the campaign and have invited the local city councils, mayors and other community leaders to “The Gift of Peace” production.

NPR, WPR, Air America and More
Department of Peace on the Radio

NPR and WPR

As many of you know, NPR aired a national 10-minute feature on the Department of Peace legislation and our Minnesota campaign March 24, 2007. Reporter Daniel Zwerdling provided an enlightening piece on the travails of the city council campaign in Fairmont, MN, led by one of our MN leaders, Judi Poulson. (If you missed it, you can still listen online).

This past week, Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR), aired an hour-long show featuring Zwerdling, Poulson and others, entitled "Is Peace A Dirty Word?" It was a wonderful follow-up and is also archived on the web. Don’t miss it! Click here to listen.

Air America Radio on May 11th

Marianne Williamson is scheduled to be on Air America radio's The Thom Hartmann show on May 11, 2007 to discuss the Department of Peace legislation and our campaign. It is scheduled to be early on in the 2:00 ET hour. Visit www.thomhartmann.com for local show listings in your area.

Honoring the Passing of a Co-sponsor

The Peace Alliance joins California District 37 in mourning the passing of Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, who died of cancer April 21, 2007. She was 68. Congresswoman Millender-McDonald endorsed the legislation to create a Department of Peace after receiving information from grassroots supporters during the Peace of the Pie Mother’s Day National Action Campaign in 2006. She was elected to Congress for seven terms, beginning in March 1996. Until a new Representative is elected, staff members at the vacant office will continue to assist constituents, although they cannot take or advocate positions of public policy. Constituents wishing to discuss particular legislation or issues should direct those concerns to their Senators until a new Representative takes office. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger set a date of June 26, 2007 for a special election to fill the seat.

We shall miss Congresswoman Millender-McDonald and her contributions to public service and the Department of Peace campaign. All supporters are invited to send letters of condolence to her family, staff and constituents via her former local office:

The Peace Alliance Foundation
Requests

PEACE REGISTRY DATA
AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Peace Alliance Foundation maintains The Peace Registry (www.peaceregistry.org), a database of programs in local communities around the country and the world that act in accordance with the principles of peace, nonviolence, compassion, and inclusion. The Registry helps demonstrate that a culture of peace already exists, provides awareness and networking opportunities, and serves as a resource for the media, researchers, government officials, and the general public.

The Peace Registry is a great resource for answering Congressional requests for examples of programs that would benefit from a Department of Peace. It helps us illustrate that the programs and skills are already there, that we know how to prevent violence, and that what is needed is the institutional heft and financial resources to nurture and expand their use.

There are currently more than 400 organizations in The Peace Registry, and we need your help to grow the database. Be on the lookout for local programs you feel are worthy of inclusion. Then nominate that program by filling out and submitting the nomination form.

The Peace Registry Manager will then contact the organization to verify accuracy and completeness of the information you provide and get their agreement to be included.

If you have questions, suggestions, or general feedback about The Peace Registry, or would like to volunteer to help in the vetting process, please contact registry [at] peacealliancefound.org.

Goodsearch.com

The Peace Alliance relies on its sister organization, the Peace Alliance Foundation, for some revenues to fund non-lobbying research and education activities. And you can help grow those resources every day just by surfing the web! Every time you do a web search using the Goodsearch engine (powered by Yahoo!), Goodsearch makes a small donation to the Peace Alliance Foundation. Set this up by going to www.goodsearch.com. Type “Peace Alliance Foundation” into the field that says “I’m supporting: Enter a charity here”, and make Goodsearch your default search engine. Those who use Goodsearch can't tell the difference between its results and those of Google, and it helps us in so many ways.
