Purpose:  The purpose of the Peace Collection is to gather and make accessible, for youth and adults, materials that document efforts for nonviolent social change and nonviolent conflict resolution between peoples and nations.

Scope:  The Collection contains information on peace movements, both historical and current; leaders of nonviolence; and Nobel Peace Prize winners. In addition, there is information on nonviolent solutions to conflict as well as information on inspirational leaders dedicated to improving the lives of people through economic and social change.

Sources:  Sources used in the data gathering for this bibliography include: The United States Institute of Peace Library, Washington D.C.; Swarthmore College Peace Collection, PA; Professor Irwin Abrams (Emeritus), Antioch College, Ohio, Nobel Peace Prize Archivist; collectors of women’s peace movement documented history; members of the Citizens for Peace; and lastly, Amazon for their online system of listing books on related subjects.  It is the intention that this peace collection be an ongoing project with the inclusion of additional materials, as they become known.

Addendum 2007:  This list contains an additional 230 publications of these 186 are children’s literature and videos.  The list includes 159 books that received awards by the Jane Addams Peace Association (JAPA) an affiliate of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).  The Jane Addams Children’s Book Award has been given annually since 1953 to honor Jane Addams and to recognize excellence in themes of peace, social justice, gender equity and the world community in literature for children.  We stand in gratitude to WILPF for their foresight in establishing the Jane Addams Peace Association.

In addition, this addendum contains materials on Restorative Practices.  Restorative Practices is a process for developing social discipline resulting in building community and reducing violence in schools.  It is based on the principles of “Restorative Justice” which seeks to actively involve all those impacted by the wrongdoing—victims, offenders, their families and friends—in addressing the consequences of an act and deciding how to repair the harm resulting from the offense.  Restorative Practices has recently received approval of the American Psychological Association over Zero Tolerance policies for schools. As a nonprofit nonpartisan organization, the Citizens for Peace Education Fund supports and conducts research, education, and informational activities to increase awareness of peace and nonviolence issues to further strengthen the global movement for a culture of peace.
