Making Peace a Priority on the Campaign Trail
by Noreen Labonte, South Florida
September 2, 2008

Photo: Noreen Labonte (South Florida DOP volunteer) and Congressman Robert WexlerWhat an amazing experience I had going to the Town Hall at Century Village in Deerfield Beach, Florida to meet Senator Joe Biden. While in line, I met Congressman Wexler (earlier this year, he signed on as a cosponsor for H.R. 808) and got the photo you see on the right.

Just before Senator Biden came out, the audience said the Pledge of Alliance and a powerful prayer. The prayer was so heart felt. The Senator shared a little about himself and his speech was compassionate and in favor of supporting Israel and the Jewish people. He opened the floor for questions; I wanted to ask him if he would support the bill but he never got to me.

With coaching from Florida Co-State Coordinator Ana Campos, my day’s mission was for Senator Biden to know about The Peace Alliance, so I ran across the room with great determination to meet who I believe will be the next vice president of the United States. I was persistent; he finally got the peace packet (with bill HR 808 inside), we shook hands and hugged, and I told him I support how he and Senator Obama are taking the high road in campaigning. I also said I was there to ask him to support creating a Department of Peace. He said he was very influential in creating the Matsunaga Institute for Peace in Hawaii!

What an amazing experience . . . I got to meet the man who I personally hope will be the next Vice President. of the United States and he heard about The Peace Alliance pushing to pass HR808, the bill to create The Department of Peace.
