Giving "The Gift of Peace" from Kansas to Florida

Two local grassroots groups put on productions of "The Gift of Peace," a powerful play by Stacey Martino and inspired by the Department of Peace Campaign. While each had very different experiences, the result was the same—inspiration, empowerment and possibility.

From State Coordinator Annette Karr, on bringing the play to McPherson, Kansas:

I loved playing the part of the writer. Despite a wonderful article in the local newspaper and a spot on the local radio station, along with several other promos, we had a sparse crowd. But seeds were planted.

The cast, who were almost as diverse as the characters they played, are ready for the next performance. We are checking into providing the play for a convocation at one of the local colleges. We are also available to do road trips across Kansas. Like I said, seeds were planted.

From Cindy Bigbie, Tallahassee, Florida

The first performance of The Gift of Peace play was fabulous. We actually had to turn folks away at the door because there wasn't a seat left in the theatre. The people who didn't make it in time were really cool though - and were actually happy that so many folks were interested in the event.

We are working on getting our local officials to one of the performances. We had a group of citizens go to the City Commission meeting last week and invite the Commissioners and Mayor, in person, to the last performance. Actually it was two young folks -- an 11- and 12-year-old -- that did the inviting. I think the Commissioners were moved to see two young people be involved in such a way.

One of the Commissioners spoke out in support of the bill and I hope will get the others to come to the performance. So far, we have heard from the Sheriff and the Fire Chief that they will be at the last performance.

We were on an hour-long call in show on our local NPR station last Thursday. Many folks called in with their support of the bill. Also, our local newspaper ran a two-page story on the DOP and the Gift of Peace two Sunday's age. It was a really comprehensive piece.

Also, there are a couple of students in the play that want to start the Student Alliance at Florida State University.
