Invest in Peace: Sample Scripts Print E-mail

Because we know that different types of tools serve different people, we've put the sample scripts in both full text (written out in full sentences) and outline (bulleted) formats. Each has a version focused for friends and family, and one for people already volunteering with the campaign. No matter which style works for you, you'll want to personalize them with your own words. The most important thing is this be real for you!

Also on this page, you'll find links to other materials you may want to have on hand or review before starting your conversations.

A few guidelines to remember when doing your ask:

  • Connect
It's really valuable to start any conversation with your regular "relationship-building" by talking with the person about whatever you'd normally talk about. Sometimes you’ll find this naturally leads into a conversation about the Department of Peace because they’ll want to know what you’re up.

  • Get Permission
Be upfront that you're planning to ask them for money, and make sure it's OK with them that you do. If they say "no," no problem! You had a great opportunity to connect and catch up with them.

  • Be Authentic
Research shows that the two main elements of a successful “ask” for money are the passion of the asker (you) and the sense of CHOICE experienced by the asked Your job is to offer them a passionate opportunity, not to try to get them to do anything.

  • Be Open
Give them the opportunity to share with you their thoughts and questions. There’s no perfect point in the conversation to do this. Just be aware of that possibility and allow it to happen.

  • Be Grateful
Any time you have a conversation about donating to The Peace Alliance, you’re expanding the awareness of the Department of Peace campaign and the power of collective action. Thank them for listening, even if they say "no." Just by talking about it, you've helped advance the campaign!

Take this on as a fun way to connect and share about peace and you'll soon find that fundraising can be FUNdraising!

Other Useful Materials

  • Talking Points

  • Statistics on Violence

  • Laser Talks (This is another approach to talking to people that is very brief in case you’re concerned about having a limited amount of time. It’s not specifically geared toward fundraising, but can be equally effective.)
