West Hollywood, CA, City Council Resolution Print E-mail

On May 21, 2007, the City Council of West Hollywood, California, adopted a resolution in support of establishing a cabinet-level Department of Peace and Nonviolence (HR 808), the first city in the Los Angeles area to do so.

Jerilyn Stapleton, team leader for California CD-28, reports:

"This has been one of the greatest experiences since being involved with the campaign for the DOPN. My kudos goes out to the other volunteers who have gotten resolutions passed in their cities. It does take an enormous effort.

"I was fortunate in that the City of West Hollywood has been a very progressive city since its inception. I had already established a relationship with the City Council by working on one member’s campaign for a State Assembly seat and programs for Women’s History Month in March, 2007, with Hollywood NOW (which supports HR 808). I attended council meetings and social functions, which enabled me to lobby them all at once. Those meetings were after making up packets that included a letter to the council, sample resolution, and back-up information and delivering them to their office. I feel having a relationship was the greatest asset in getting this task accomplished."
