The Peace Alliance and the Peace Network of the Ozarks will join forces Friday to honor mothers by advancing the cause of peace, the intent of the originator of Mother’s Day, Julia Ward Howe, who called for “Mankind ... to march forward to a new Era of human understanding.”
Howe envisioned this new era would be brought about when people invest in peace rather than war.
On Friday, the Peace Alliance will gather at Rep. Roy Blunt’s office, joining the Democratic Alliance’s national call for the establishment of a U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence. Blunt’s office is located at 2740 E. Sunshine St.
The Peace Network will be also join peace activist Cindy Sheehan’s national Mother of a March campaign by asking supporters to bring food (non-perishable), personal items and clothing to share with The Kitchen, which serves homeless and needy mothers and children.
This local effort is prompted by two national actions: passage of H.R. 808 establishing a Department of Peace and Sheehan’s call to end the war in Iraq.
“We call upon all concerned citizens to join our efforts to do better in protecting our children,” said a news release from the Peace Network. “Bring a will to promote peace and food and basic essentials necessary for human existence.”
