Making History Print E-mail

by Sarah Goresch, Guest Blogger

My journey on Capitol Hill started with an unnecessarily circuitous route around downtown Washington D.C. via metro.  Being from a smaller town where I strictly depend on my personal car, I got confused and transferred to three different trains just to find out that the Capitol building was right across the street from the train I initially boarded.

Aside from exposing me as an official “Metro-Idiot”,  Saturday afternoon marked a time in history for the state of Michigan.  I, Sarah Goresch, was officially the first youth to speak in Senator Carl Levin’s office on behalf of Western Michigan.

My experience:  Not only was I overly intimidated by the number of political figures within earshot of my voice, but also I was talking to a man which I voted into office.  I tripped over my words; sentences needed to be re-stated; and my blood pressure must have been 180/110, at least!  Upon exiting with my fellow Michiganders, however, I had many pats-on-the-back.  I did what no other youth had ever done.

Saturday I made a fool of myself.

Saturday I made history.

Saturday was a day that will remain embedded in my memory for the rest of my life.
