On September 11, 1906, Mohandas
K. Gandhi launched
the modern non-violent movement by pledging to use
non-violence and civil disobedience in his quest for justice. His decision
that day changed the course of human history.
To honor this 100th anniversary, New
Yorkers for a Department of Peace and the M.K. Gandhi
Institute for Nonviolence are
sponsoring 100 Years of Non-Violence, a campaign that
invites citizens around the world to attend and organize screenings
of the movie Gandhi on September 11, 2006.
NY-DOP and MKGI are having a short
film produced,
featuring Arun Gandhi, to be shown before the feature
that will help dispel common myths and reveal the true power of nonviolence.
Prepare to be inspired!
SPECIAL
NOTE: The Peace
Alliance wants to congratulate the NY group on an incredible effort!
Just recently, and because of their efforts, a theater in NYC has
agreed to screen the Academy Award winning film GANDHI all
day and night on September 11th. Other theaters are also considering.
In addition to the ideas below, developed
by the NY group, The Peace Alliance suggests the short film they
are producing offers a good opportunity to host a house party in
your home on the evening of September 11th to view it and discuss
the life and work of Gandhi, as well as introduce our campaign to
establish a U.S. Department of Peace. This could also be a wonderful
opportunity to announce your plans for the Walk for Peace on the
16th and get people to make pledges or join the walk!
