Our goal is to have a coordinated media blitz for the Peace
of the Pie campaign , starting with initial press releases going out the week of
March 20th to as many print, television and radio stations as possible. We
have put together a “virtual press kit” for you to use in
this campaign, but as always, you are free to add, delete, revise and
otherwise personalize it for your state:
PRESS KIT:
- Press Release announcing upcoming
May event (
Word doc or rich text format) also, for press release #2 click here. Press release # 3 click here (released 5/9/06)
- Talking Points about the legislation (

- Updated
FAQ’s (

- What
People are Saying (

- Past press coverage, especially from your state, if
possible (www.thepeacealliance.org or
go to the individual state websites, where applicable)
- Pie Chart (
- Statistics on Violence (
- List of organizations working in your state (create
your own;
click here for national partner organizations)
- List of Planned
Peace Events in your area (create your own)
For those of you who are new to this, these documents are typically
put in a folder marked “Press Kit,” and handed out to interested
reporters. If you have an individual state website, you may want
to post it there, too, so journalists can find this information online
as well. It will help to keep a record of those reporters to whom
you’ve given press kits.
After you revise the attached or create your own press release, please
email or fax it to as many media sources as you can come up with, during
the week of March 20th. We will have our media service soon, but
as of right now it’s not a reality. You can go to www.congress.org or www.usnpl.com to
find a comprehensive list of media in your area. If you send a
press release to more than one media source at a time, it is recommended
that you put all media addresses in the “bcc” line, putting
your own email address in the “to” line. Please copy

Whenever your get your first press release out, please
follow up by targeted phone calling of reporters within a day or two
of sending the release. This will call attention to your press
release and give you an opportunity to talk about upcoming Peace of the
Pie events in your area. Please invite the reporter to attend an
event. The
plan is to send out at least 2 more press releases before May 12th, each
followed by more targeted phone calling. You’re building
a relationship, and it takes repetition and time. Be sure you remind
journalists of your events by calling the day before and the morning
of May 12th. And as is true of all people, reporters appreciate
genuine compliments about their work. We’ll be discussing
this as well as general media strategy at our telephone conference on
March 16th, for those of you who are planning to call in.
Please also see our Media Tips section for more tips
on working with the media.
Again, these documents are meant as guidelines and you
are free to modify any attachment to fit your particular needs. We
are happy to work with you on any of the above, so feel free to contact
us at any time.
Peace and best wishes,
