Breaking the cycle of war making: our country will not find peace until we take responsibility for our wars. Edward Tick wrote this article about the life of a soldier as part of A Just Foreign Policy,
the Summer 2008 issue of YES! Magazine.
Inspired by the work of Ed Tick, PhD, one of the speakers at the March
2008 Northeast Conference in Rhode Island and author of "War and the
Soul," volunteers have established the Department of Peace Community
Service to Veterans Committee.
"…One of the most important lessons of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is that military success is not sufficient to win," Secretary Gates said in a November 2007 speech. In the same speech he added, "New institutions are needed for the 21st century, new organizations with a 21st century mind-set."
Budgets are more than just lines of numbers; they are moral documents that tell individuals, organizations and nations what they truly value. More than mere words or platitudes, budgets are a reflection of the ways in which we do--or don't--"put our money where our mouth is."
