...What we really need is a Department of Peace, say the more than 100 people who attended this weekend's conference in Schaumburg for the grassroots Campaign for a U.S. Department of Peace.

Activists for peace from 47 states made calls to their senators and
representatives in Washington, D.C. last week urging support for HR
808, proposed legislation to create a cabinet-level U.S. Department of
Peace. The 68 co-sponsors of the bill were also called, with activists
expressing thanks for their on-going support.

The idea of a Federal Department of Peace and Non-violence is not new,
dating back to the inception of our country when framers of the U.S.
Constitution, including George Washington, discussed the need for a
“Peace Office” to counterbalance the efforts of the “War Office.” As
years passed, the concept would occasionally reappear in legislative
discussions, only to vanish again due to lack of widespread support.
